Grew out of Cockcroft’s improvising on Berio’s Sequenza VIIb while studying in France: long melodic lines alternate with Berio-style multiphonics set to funky rhythms, which a friend said sounded like a chicken. After Black & Blue it is his most widely played piece. About 6 minutes.
